    Description

WE ARE GLAD TO COMBINE MULTIPLE PURCHASES INTO ONE SHIPMENT IN ORDER TO REDUCE COST, HOWEVER, PLEASE DON'T PAY UNTIL WE HAVE A CHANCE TO SEND A COMBINED INVOICE.
From an Estate Sale of 1920's-1960's CRYSTAL & CHINA, we offer from the CENTRAL GLASS WORKS  MANUFACTORY in Wheeling, W. Virginia, a GROUP of FOUR WONDERFUL BLOWN LEAD CRYSTAL Stemline# 528 6 1/4" by 3" wide WATER GOBLETS with the MOST DESIRABLE "ART DECO" #410 EARLY “BALDA" ETCH consisting of a GEOMETRIC/FLORAL pattern having a vertical geometric ornament flanked by swirled circles of scrolls, flowers & leaves - THE BALDA ETCH FOUND ON OUR GROUP OF STEMS IS THE EARLY VARIATION(made in the 1920’s), HAVING AN EXTRA FLORAL SWAG UNDER THE MAIN 3 PART ETCH. Smooth stem. High quality lead crystal(ring like a bell). Smooth pontil mark on underside.
NOTE ON STEMLINE AND BALDA ETCH: according to the Schmidt book referenced below, this set of smooth stemmed stems with the pear shaped bowl that flares outward is part of Stemline #528 - the fruit cocktail, tall sherbet and claret wine from this line with the “Thistle” etch are pictured in his book. It is known in only clear - no colors.
The Balda etch is named after the well known master designer of this etch, Joseph Balda - he was a free-lance designer who did most of his designs for Heisey but also designed for Central Glass and other makers of elegant glass from 1920-1950's. This etch is pictured in the Schmidt book on different stemlines(no examples on #528) and a list is shown of eight stemlines that were made with this etch. However, it is strange that stemline# 528 is not on the list - most likely because the etch is not often found on this stemline(hence, no examples shown) and no pricing information was available when the book was published.
Further on the Balda etch: the early variation has an extra floral swag under the main 3 part etch and this version is tough to find(of the 10 photos of stems with the Balda etch shown in Schmidt only 1 has the earlier version - it is shown with a closeup on stemline# 818). And, there are also two styles of the etching template - the earlier version which is thicker and fuller and the later version which is well defined and trim.
CONDITION: this 91-100YEAR OLD group is in superb condition without any cracks, chips, nicks or stains; appear to have been never used.
PROVENANCE: this clear goblet with etch is shown on the Websites of the Crystal Replacements Services as Central Glass Works's
Balda etch(not identified as to stemline but, for sure, it is from stemline# 528(see below)).THIS STEMLINE IS ONLY FOUND IN CLEAR OR AMBER. The Balda etch is also pictured in the Schmitt book referenced below and is listed as being found on eight different numbered stemlines, however, no mention is made of Balda on our stemline# 528 - but,  stems from #528 line are pictured with the Thistle etch. Also, the EARLIER “EXTRA SWAG“ ETCH VARIATION FOUND ON THE STEMS WE ARE OFFERING IS PICTURED ON A TALL SHERBET FROM STEMLINE# 818.
PRICING GUIDELINES: clear items from Central Glass Works's stemline# 528 with the THISTLE ETCH can be readily found on EBay’s 3 month & Worthpoint’s 15 year histories, however, items from #528 with the BALDA ETCH APPEAR TO BE VERY SCARCE(two sales in 15 years, with the last one 4 years ago, and no current offers for sale on EBay). Further, we examined all 118 Balda sales of stems or tumblers in clear and colors to look for any with the “extra swag” variation and COULDN'T FIND ANY - IN DOING THIS, WE DID RUN ACROSS A BALDA VASE HAVING THE "EXTRA SWAG" ETCH. Also, we found 16 sales of stemline# 528 in clear with the Thistle etch. REGARDING THE TWO SALES OF STEMLINE# 528 WITH BALDA IN AMBER(ACCORDING TO THE  SCHMIDT BOOK, CLEAR & AMBER HAVE THE SAME VALUE) WE HAVE: (5) tall sherbets that sold in 3/2016 for ; and, (8) water goblets sold in 7/2011 for 0 - THE ITEMS IN BOTH SALES
    DO
    NOT
    HAVE
THE EXTRA SWAG IN ETCH VARIATION AND ARE NOT IN THE NEVER USED CONDITION OF OUR OFFERING. Please check out these websites.
