Give the final touch of pure elegance at your next special celebration with these dazzling crystal goblet beverage glasses.
The difference between Lenox crystal and mass-produced glassware is in the raw materials and processes. Crystal is composed of 6 percent lead, which gives it a weight, clarity and hardness that can be etched or cut. Common glassware is made of soda lime, and is too brittle for such treatments. The Lenox factory used the German method in which a gob of molten glass is gathered at the end of a pipe, placed in a mold and hand-blown. The blower shapes the goblet bowl by breathing in just the right amount of air pressure. Common glass is pressed by machines, and some crystal also is made that way. Machine-made crystal is usually bulkier and heavier. A hand-blown goblet is distinguished by ultra-thin walls and the sound.
Lenox was founded in 1889 by Walter Scott Lenox as Lenox's Ceramic Art Company, Trenton, New Jersey. For most of the 20th century Lenox was the most prestigious American maker of tablewares, as well as decorative pieces. Lenox was the first North American bone china to be used in the White House, and the company made tableware for six U.S. presidents. Lenox's products were first displayed at The Smithsonian Institution in 1897. Richard Nixon toasted a head of state with Lenox crystal and four U.S. presidents have received engraved Lenox crystal bowls made at the factory in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania. Lennox crystal has been called “the Waterford crystal of the U.S." Lenox discontinued producing high-end crystal at its US plant in 2002.
