    Description

Santiago de CUBA - Club San Carlos:  The "Club San Carlos" in Santiago had a history since colonial times. It became the cultural center of the Santiago bourgeoisie since the late nineteenth century and continued in the twentieth century joining the most economically and socially important individuals in the city, both the older rancid families and the newly emerging rich from the city's economic development.  The "Club San Carlos" was inaugurated with the name of "San Carlos Academy", having a Cuban and French the majority among its founders. It was located at the top of Calle Santo Tomas # 1 and was established as a Fencing Hall that operated continuously from its foundation to the cessation of Spanish domination in Cuba. After moving several times of local, settled definitively in the old residence of don Bartolomé Portuondo and Rizo, Marquess of the Delicias of Tempú.  In 1864 it took the name of Club San Carlos, a title more in line with its functions and increased its membership with the best of the commercial and intellectual society of the city. The activities of the club included receptions, etiquette, costume festivities, political meetings, acts of homage, commemorative activities and banquets.  Santiago de Cuba is the second largest city of Cuba and capital city of Santiago de Cuba Province in the south-eastern area of the island, some 870 km (540 mi) south-east of the Cuban capital of Havana.  Historically Santiago de Cuba has long been the second most important city on the island after Havana, and still remains the second largest. It is on a bay connected to the Caribbean Sea and is an important sea port. In 2004 the city of Santiago de Cuba had a population of about 509,143 people.  The White Border Era (1915-30) postcard is in good condition, but shows some edge wear and soiling.  Edicion "Renacimiento" Santiago de Cuba.  No. 19.
