1922 Standard Oil of Indiana First Aid Box, Original Rustic Charm
Imagine the stories this 100 year old latched metal first aid box could tell!
Produced by Standard Oil of Indiana in the early '20s, this official first aid kit was stored in one of the company factories and used for employee injuries due to worksite accidents.  A printed instruction guide and list of contents is noted on the inside lid, opposite to where the supplies were stored.  It is fascinating that the first emergency ingredient listed is Stanolax, which was a paraffin produced by Standard Oil of Indiana, and used by physicians in the early 20th century to treat a variety of medical conditions, including constipation.  What we're not sure of is its indication in an emergency, but it was common thinking at the time to attribute as many as 50% of all physical ailments to constipation.
This original box weighs 1 lb, 8 oz empty and measures 8 1/4"(l) x 7"(w) x 4"(h).  It has been well used over the years with fading, scratches and stains.  It is slightly bent, has spots of superficial rust and paint cracking, and even a hole in the bottom.  A previous owner had painted letters in red on the front lid.  Stamped on the front latch are the words "Patent Appld For".
All said, the resultant earthy patina gives this century-old box a special allure.  We could see multiple uses for it, from an updated, 21st century first aid kit, to a storage or display of one's special vintage collection of smalls, to a tackle or ammo lock box, with multiple other uses left only to one's imagination.
